Before deciding on the genre I am going to work in, I decided to undergo research into a few of them to decide which one best fit my plans and ideas. Here are some of the ones i looked at:
Comedy - Comedies have light-hearted plots, and are deliberately designed to amuse and provoke laughter (with one-liners, jokes, etc.) by exaggerating the situation, the language, action, relationships and characters. However, i decided not to make a comedy film they can be hard to pull off well, with a well written script being vital, an area in which i have little experiance in. Also, what i find funny might not appeal a wider audience, so comprimises may have to be made to make the film more commercial. Example of a comedy film; Superbad.
Horror - designed to frighten and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. I decided against this genre as i have worked in horror for my AS production, and i would like the chance to enchance and learn new skills in a wider field of film. Example of horror; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Science Fiction - Often quasi-scientific, visionary and imaginative - complete with heroes, aliens, distant planets, impossible quests, improbable settings, fantastic places, great dark and shadowy villains, futuristic technology, unknown and unknowable forces, and extraordinary monsters ('things or creatures from space'), either created by mad scientists or by nuclear havoc. I am not working in this genre as i feel any attempt at sci-fi on no budget and a handheld camcorder will end up looking cheap and unprofessional. This is because a lot of sci-fi is down to futuristic locations and special effects, which i have no access to. The end result might end up similar to Plan 9 from outer space.
Example of science fiction; Star Wars
Social Realism - depicts social and racial injustice, economic hardship, through unvarnished pictures of life's struggles; often depicting working class activities as heroic. It is a genre which is more substance over style, a vast contrast to Hollywood produced films currently saturating mainstream cinema. Also, it is possible to produce an effective film on very little budget, as Shane Meadows proved in Smalltime. Example of social realism; This is England
